Arguably the great beast of the Olympic Mountains, Mt. Olympus is the highest peak in the area. The dense chain of mountains, vast network of Glaciers, and one of few remaining rain forest in the Northern Hemisphere which are endemic to the Olympic Mountains create an ecosystem that is unique on a global scale. Within the Olympics themselves, a quiet sub-range to the south of Mt. Olympus, the Valhallas, boasts massive ice cliffs and rock bands, and it is easily the most isolated region in the area. With 6 days of food in our packs, Jason Hummel and I decided to tackle Mt. Olympus via this remote and unique area.
Here’s the 7-day epic that ensued as we set off to explore the unknown.
