Scenic Day at Temple Basin Ski Area

After a great day of riding powder at Mount Cheeseman ski area the weather forecast was looking bad again. I made the plan to hang out up at Arthurs Pass in preparation for the Temple Basin Ski Area 2014 Splitfest. I hung out in bad weather for the next week and checked out Temple Basin again while waiting for Ryan, Yossi and Pow to arrive on the weekend.

Crossing the Waimakariri river

Temple Basin is someplace special founded in the 1930 and has crazy terrain. All made better by the 45 minute hike up steep switchbacks just to get to the hill. Though arriving in a storm it was great to get back to the backcountry Mecca of New Zealand.

With my License to Chill pass working at Temple Basin it was a day to check out the resort again. It was empty as the clouds slowly lifted and the place came into view.

The one thing to know about Temple Basin ski area is that there are no beginner slopes. Every line to get back to the base requires a technical couloir, traversing over cliffs or a 10 minute hike back down.

But the views of bar to none of the Southern Alps of New Zealand and the Arthurs Pass backcountry. Temple Basin Ski Area is a gem within the Club Fields.

While the snow wasn’t that great it was fun moving around. I was ready to get out touring again and preparing for the the Splitfest.
