Ski touring Fastdalstinden in the Lyngen Alps

What does one do when they are touring solo in Northern Norway on a day of celebration….. A Sunrise mission and Birthday run ski touring on Fastdalstinden in the Lyngen Alps!!

After leaving Kviteberg on foot I walked the first 3 kms at midnight trying to make it to the summit of Fastdalstinden while taking in one of the last sunsets before the midnight sun arrived in the upcoming days.

Looking down into the Lyngen fjord racing against the sunrise

Once I arrived to the snowpack I started skinning around the lower lake and towards the peak on the right in the photo below

Looking up Fastdaltinden and my climbing route up the middle rock route to the ridge than to the summit

As I made my way toward Fastdaltinden I enjoyed a silent morning having the whole place to myself for hours before the next group of ski tourers would arrive.

Looking towards the Store Kjostinden massif after skinning around the lake and up the lower slopes

As I started skinning up the peak I was blown away by the early shades of pink starting to grow and I knew I was in a race for time to get on the summit ridge before the sunrise.

Stunning hues of pink basking above the mountains

Once I made it up to the ridge the surrounding peaks started glowing in the morning sun making the stunning scenery even more stunning.

Looking down at my approach route

When I finally made it up to the ridge it was 2 A.M. and the sun had just made it over the mountains to the North making the upper alpine glow bright red.

Another 15 minutes and I will be on the summit taking in the surrounding views

When I finally made it up to the top I hung around for the next 2 hours watching the sunrise alpenglow and enjoying a quiet morning with a stunning view of the Lyngen Alps surrounding me.

Looking across at Store Kjostinden and some lines I would ride a few days later

After staring off in to the distance for a few hours it was time to strap into my board and ride 3000 feet of excellent snow back down to the snow line.

Preparing for my birthday powder run

Turn after turn it turned out to be a great snow riding the upper section before carefully making my way onto the lower and steeper face with only my tracks on a blank canvas of snow.

Milking my turns as I make my way down

I was able to ride continuously down into the lower bowl in good conditions before switching to skins for the final exit on the lower slopes before bootpacking back to the farm I was staying at and in bed before 7 a.m. It was the perfect way to spend my birthday

Looking back up at my line as I start riding across the flat section

I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate my birthday than ski touring Fastdalstinden in the Lyngen Alps and I felt comfortable enough with the snow to make it a solo mission. All in all it was a total success.
