Háhttagáisi is one of those peaks that stands out in the Tamokdalen Valley as it towers above its next door neighbor Sjufjellet. Its beauty is its danger with a wide open South facing slope that is one of the biggest avi swaths in Norway. When conditions are stable and good it is one of the better runs but if conditions are sketchy it is a death wish.  Getting to the summit is an easy but long route but once there you have a few options.

A Closer Look at Háhttagáisi

The photo above shows the South Chute that goes from the summit pleateu. While only being a few hundred meters it is what’s is below it that makes the line so special. Nothing but a wide open South facing slope all the way to the valley below.

Looking down the South face of Háhttagáisi

In the photo below you can see a small route that goes through the rock band on the right hand side.

Looking across the valley at the South face you can see how huge and wide the avalanche path is and what makes the South route so sketchy in the wrong conditions.

If you want a longer but easier route to summit the West bowl accessed by a low col has mellow slopes pretty much all the way to the top.

Once past the lower cirque of the West bowl it is a smooth route via the North West face all the way to the top where no crampons are needed if the top 100 meters isn’t firm.
