ski touring up Nerotinden with Tamokfjellet in the Background

Why a bit more demanding Tamokfjellet is a great alternative to some of the more standard ski tours in the Tamokdalen Valley. Being a huge massif it offers lines on numerous aspects. From south facing corn to North facing powder there are almost always oppertunites for good turns no matter the weather. It seems the more time I spend on the mountain the more its potential opens up. The photos below only scratch the surface but it gives a good layout of the Eastern side.

A Closer Look at Tamokfjellet

If you have driven to the Tamokhuset from the north you have passed by Tamokfjellet. Being just a few kilometers from there you can’t help but stare at the semi complex north face. In the photo below you can see the western side with Camp Tamok on the middle right.

If you have ever climbed Blåbærfjellet it gives a great vantage point to the Northern face and bowls on Tamokfjellet.

Looking at the western side of the peak this is just above Camp Tamok and one of the main starting points for the tour.

Looking at the South face of Tamokfjellet

While the north side sees a handful of ski tours every year the South side by Vassdalen is relatively quiet. Being a much longer approach it runs numerous kilometers from West to East.

Sunrise over the Vassdalen Valley

By far the most popular run on the South side is the obvious chute that runs to the top. Being straight foreword and fall line all the way to the valley I would consider it a Tamokdalen Classic.

Looking closer it is a simple crampon climb all the way to the top and can be riden in both powder and corn conditions.

Once again the Vassdalen Valley offers multiple days worth of ski touring opportunities as the ridge connects both Tamokfjellet and Lemmetfjellet.

Just to the east of the South Chute is a relatively easy col to climb that would give you access to lines like the Morning Mission on the opposite side.

Like I mentioned above I’ve only scratched the surface of this area and I hope that this page will grow next year. I’m already coming up with potential adventures here in the near future.
